Dean's
Office : All Hands Memo
January
17, 2000
TO:
MBA Students
FR: Barry Posner (Dean, Day 931)
RE: All-Hands MEMO
In
the Fall and Spring Quarters, we're able to host All-Hands Meetings
where we can all gather together and I can share information with
you, respond to questions, solicit feedback, recognize accomplishments,
and build community spirit. In the Winter, with unpredictable weather,
we've used other formats. This time around we're experimenting with
this memo and the opportunity for us to "chat" via the web.
Kudos
for the MBA Program
- U.S.
News and World Report rankings again place our program among
the top 15 in the nation (top 5% of all AASCB-programs) -
for the fourth year in a row.
- GMAT
scores for our entering students this Fall continued to average
above the 90th percentile for all 250,000+ who took the exam last
year.
- One-unit
modules are a hit! These past two quarters nearly one
in five students has chosen to take one of these highly focused,
topical, innovative electives nested somewhere within their regular
MBA course schedule.
- Leavey
Leadership Lectures strike a responsive chord, with nearly
100 students in attendance at each session. These first-person,
up-close sessions from leaders, on leadership, are stimulating
and provocative. If you haven't tried one yet, take an extra hour
off from work and join us once a month.
How
Worthwhile Is This Program You Are In? Let me offer you two
perspectives. First, personal comments from a 1995 graduate, former
Hewlett-Packard manager, who sent a note recently about his experiences
in the doctoral program at Indiana University: "....I must say that
my SCU education really equipped me, as the rigor and high standards
carried over into my first four classes. I did very well (all A's),
not to brag, but rather a statement of 'thank you' for preparing
me through the process and discipline I learned within my MBA studies.
I have done well because I was taught well! I wanted to share that
with you as a testimony to SCU's effectiveness in the lives of each
student. SCU is shaping and preparing the leaders for today and
the future."
The
results from our recent MBA Alumni Salary Survey provide another
testament to value. August 1998 through June 1999 graduates reported
an average increase in salary between enrollment in the program
and graduation of just over $30,000.
Other
survey highlights:
- The
average starting salary among respondents seeking new full-time
employment at the time of graduation was $81,044.
- About
25% of these graduates reported receiving a signing bonus (average
$17,558), and about 36% reported annual bonus or other compensation
averaging $11,020.
- The
average salary among respondents who continued in their existing
employment at the time of graduation was $86,620.
- About
half of these people reported receiving annual bonuses or other
compensation averaging $16,718.
- About
1 in 5 MBA graduates is employed by a start-up--and 1 in 5 of
these is employed by a start-up they helped found!
- 70%
of students employed at the start of the program received tuition
reimbursement from their employer. The average amount of reimbursement
received was just under $23,000.
On
the attached page,
you can see how favorably Santa Clara graduates compare to those
from other schools in terms of average starting salaries (and GMAT
scores).
MBA
Student and Alumni Programs Director Comes On Board
Maureen Muscat (MBA '99) joins the School as Director of MBA Student
and Alumni Programs. In this role she will work with MBA students
and alumni in planning and implementing co-curricular programs,
and work closely with other student and career services professionals
to increase and enhance these services. For example, Maureen is
working with the MBA Student Association leadership, developing
a new MBA-PLUS program of professional development workshops, involved
with new student orientation sessions, and coordinating the quarter's
MBA Munchies (scheduled next week on Wednesday and Thursday). She'll
be circulating the hallways those evenings, so stop by and say hello,
and find out about how to get involved with various opportunities,
like the consulting group, international club, orientations, programming
board, and the like.
Feedback,
Questions, Suggestions....Welcome and On-Line Responses
As we're not getting together face-to-face this quarter, how about
sending me any comments about the School, program, faculty, staff,
procedures, policies, or whatever (positive, negative, objective,
subjective, neutral). Send an e-mail to DEANSLOG@scu.edu (or drop
off a written note in the suggestion box outside the MBA Student
Services Office) by Thursday, February 3. We'll post responses on
our web site (business.scu.edu/services/deansoffice/allhandsfeedback.htm)
by the following Tuesday. Let
us know how you are doing and what you are thinking.
Thanks
for being part of Santa Clara: The premier business program for
Silicon Valley. Barry
