  • Current research interests include consumer attitudes toward food safety risks and the relationship between strategic management and firm financial performance.

Resources, Food, and the Environment Covers the relationship between food production, resource use and the environment.

Introduction to Agribusiness Management Basics of operating and financing the agribusiness and marketing its products. A computerized management simulation game is used. 

Agricultural Sales This course was developed by Dr. Baker to teach the principles of agricultural sales. Students have substantial interaction with professional salespeople.

  • Advisor to approximately 12 MBA students pursuing the Concentration in Food and Agribusiness. 
  • Advisor to approximately 25 undeclared undergraduate business majors
  • Member of the Undergraduate Advising Team at New Mexico State University. One of three advisors for approximately 200 departmental majors. 
  • Organized and coordinated field trips for both graduate and undergraduate students to expose them to management practices, types of organization and various forms of business ownership used by agribusinesses. 
  • Faculty advisor to: Alpha Zeta Honorary Agricultural Fraternity, Agriculture and Home Economics Council and the Agricultural Economics Club 

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT 

Developed a six-week short course for executives and managers from developing countries. Instruction in finance, marketing, production management and quality control and strategic management, executive lectures by agribusiness leaders and weekly site visits to agribusiness firms. Course is in its eighth year. 

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE

  • Past officer of the Western Agricultural Economics Association. 
  • Organizer and former chair of Western Regional Coordinating Committee-72 on Agribusiness Competitiveness. WC-72 is a group of approximately 50 agribusiness researchers that meets annually to present and discuss current agribusiness research. 
  • Organize the Strategic Planning Seminar for the California Agricultural Leadership Program. Each year 30 student are selected for this highly competitive two year program designed to develop California's future agricultural leaders. The Institute of Agribusiness was chosen to develop a strategic planning seminar to help these managers deal with issues such as planning in a dynamic environment, food safety and ethics.
